Organic Coffee

Organic coffee is grown without the use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers, thereby assuring the health of the soil, forest and farmers. All of our coffee is certified organic by the Washington State Department of Agriculture.

Certified Fair Trade Coffee

Fair trade coffee gives farmers a better standard of living and producer cooperatives are guaranteed a minimum fair price for their crop. All of our coffee is Fair Trade Certified by TransFair.

Shade Grown Coffee

Shade grown coffee protects migratory bird habitat and reduces clear-cutting in tropical rainforests as well as enhancing flavor. All of our coffee is verified as shade grown by our importers and whenever possible, our coffee is Shade Grown Certified by SMBC (this certification is only available in certain origin countries).

Bolivia "Los Yungas"

Smooth and balanced with a fragrant aroma, this high-grown Bolivian coffee possesses a rich, full body. When roasted to a medium level, it has a sweet flavor with notes of almond and hazelnut.

In high elevation valleys 12 hours from the capital lay several small villages in the remote Yungas region. The road from the Bolivian capital, La Paz, to the coffee growing valleys of the Yungas has officially been declared the most dangerous road in the world. The relatively narrow gravel track with waterfalls spilling onto it from above, and huge drops on the downhill slope, descends nearly 10,000 feet to the misty valleys of the Yungas.

During the 1950's, wealthy landowners took over this region and enslaved the native people. In 1991, through governmental land reform, the larger landowners were made to relinquish their holdings of these small farms and return the rightful ownership back to the families who originally owned these parcels.

The small farmers are now entirely independent, have title to their own land and have freedom to search for ways to improve their income, their own lives, and the health of their community. Fair Trade coffee is an important way for these farmers to make a better life for themselves and their children.

This coffee is Fair Trade Certified by TransFairUSA, Organic Certified by the Washington State Department of Agriculture and grown in shaded conditions by small farmer cooperatives.

Ethiopian Yirgacheffe

Fragrant and floral with wine and fruit overtones, the Yirgacheffe is one of the most prized East African coffees. When roasted to a medium-dark level, it has a smooth medium body and long, lingering finish.

The Oromia Cooperative that produces this coffee is featured in the award-winning documentary Black Gold. We urge all of our customers to take the time to view this excellent film.

This coffee is Fair Trade Certified by TransFairUSA, Certified Organic by the Washington State Department of Agriculture and is grown in shaded conditions.

Guatemalan

One of our favorite single-origin coffees, we roast our Guatemala to a dark level that brings out the full potential of this bean. The result is a full-bodied, wonderfully aromatic coffee that has a bold, spicy flavor in the cup.

This region of Guatemala is a beautiful combination of jungle and rainforest, with coffee growing throughout the forest floor. Among the coffee, a variety of other plants provide food for the producers and their families and it is very common to see bananas, beans, peppers, oranges, lemons and avocados growing within this diversified forest. This group of over 350 coffee producers are spread out over the rugged mountain terrain. These growers exclusively offer their coffee as Fair Trade and when asked what they see as one of the greatest benefits of Fair Trade, they replied, "The men do not have to leave the village to work in the coastal area after the coffee harvest; they can remain home with their families."

This coffee is Fair Trade Certified by TransFairUSA and Certified Organic by the Washington State Department of Agriculture. It is grown in nautral shade by small farmer cooperatives.

Cafe Femenino Peru - Decaf

Decaffeinated Cafe Femenino Peru is a dark, complex decaf coffee with fine acidity, notes of bakers chocolate and a clean finish. SWISS WATER Process decaffeinated.

This Fair Trade and organic certified coffee is grown, processed and traded exclusively by women. The women then decide how to use the additional funds to better their lives and those of their children.

We know that you will enjoy this unique coffee for its wonderful taste as well as for the special story that underlies its production.

Sumatra Decaf -Telong

A perfect compliment to ice cream or lighter deserts, our decaffeinated Sumatra "Telong" is a full-bodied, chocolaty decaf coffee with a sweet aroma and mellow finish. A medium-dark roast preserves the exotic wildness that Sumatra coffees are famous for. SWISS WATER Process decaffeinated.

Our Sumatra coffee comes from the scenic highland slopes of Aceh province in northern Sumatra. There are over 200 small coffee producers who contribute to this very important OCIA certified organic coffee production. The farmers and communities of this remote region face a number of environmental and socio-economic challenges, including soil erosion, deforestation, low and unstable incomes. The organization, production, technical assistance and higher prices for certified organic coffee help these remote farmers by being able to generate a better income for themselves and improve the economic basis in the communities.

This coffee is Fair Trade Certified by TransFairUSA and Certified Organic by the Washington State Department of Agriculture and is grown in shaded conditions.

El Salvador

The Brown Bag Series is our line of limited-release coffees that we feel are truly exceptional. Brown Bag Series coffees are only available in one pound bags for a limited time and include a booklet that describes the coffee and shows where it is grown.

This limited-release coffee is grown in the mountains of Eastern El Salvador, where the elevation and topography create perfect conditions for coffee cultivation. The area in which the coffee is grown is dedicated to organic cultivation, with crops such as corn, beans, vegetables and citrus fruits appearing next to the coffee plants. The coffee is grown under a rich canopy of shade trees, making the farms sanctuary to many neotropical migratory birds and other endangered local species.

These extremely uniform beans showcase notes of sweet apple and fresh pipe tobacco with a medium body and clean finish.

This coffee is Fair Trade Certified by TransFairUSA, Organic Certified by the Washington State Department of Agriculture and grown in shaded conditions by small farmer cooperatives.

All Grounds For Change coffee is roasted to order and shipped fresh daily. It's package in air-tight, foil-lined bags with one-way degassing valves to preserve freshness.
